Environmental projects

We are actively committed to protecting the environment as much as possible and we continuously invest in realizing environmental projects. This achieves substantial savings on energy consumption and a reduction in CO2 emissions. In addition, investments are being made in improved storage of chemicals and LPG, and thus in increased safety and protection of the soil. In our Environmental Overview brochure, we describe the most important environmental results, our environmental management system, sustainable development and our efforts to save energy.

Biodiversity

The refinery pays attention to biodiversity. Different types of birds use an undeveloped part of the terrain of 4 hectares as a breeding area and nature can take its course. The biodiversity is great, there are various insects, birds, amphibians and game. Many plants, shrubs and shrubs alternate. As soon as birds’ nests have been identified, they are marked and left alone. The mowing policy on the refinery site is aimed at mowing only after the breeding season. There are also special orchids throughout the site. This is mainly due to the fact that the soil is not fertilized and this has created a “niche” for special orchids. In 2015, for example, a total of 45 reed orchids, 33 white beech orchids and over 1,000 blue orchids were counted. As soon as special orchids are detected, they are marked and the blooming orchids are spared during mowing.

Emissions to the air

The refinery’s policy is to reduce emissions, the emission of harmful substances and gases. Research is being done on fuels that meet strict future emission standards. Our energy policy makes us one of the most energy efficient refineries in the world. This contributes to the reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2) production. The total annual sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions have been greatly reduced since 2009 thanks to investments made. Thanks to an innovative flue gas cleaning installation on our petroleum distillation furnace, nitrogen oxides (NOx) are converted into nitrogen and water using the catalytic reduction process. The amount of nitrogen oxides in the flue gases of this distillation furnace has been reduced by 80% thanks to this cleaning installation. As a result, NOx emissions have also fallen sharply from 2009 onwards.
