Personal Safety

Argos Refinery aims to ensure that everyone goes home healthy and well after each working day. One of the most important factors in personal safety is human behavior. When we follow procedures that rule out risks, unsafe situations and accidents are prevented. Thanks to our work permit system, we manage potential risks and we pay full attention to safety during the performance of all work. Necessary personal protective equipment (such as helmets and safety glasses) is readily available. Workplaces are made safe by means of risk inventories and evaluations, and observation rounds are also run during which correction and praise. Accidents and near-accidents are reported so that improvements can be made to measures, working methods or policy.

Process Safety

Safe installations and procedures that rule out risks are an important part of safety. However, with a good safety culture, an extra step can be taken. Through our safety culture program “We Intervene!” We focus on complimenting good behavior, stopping unsafe behavior, addressing each other respectfully, listening to each other, being open to feedback and collaboration. Everyone takes part in this: employees from all departments, management and contractors. Our safety culture has the additional advantage that our employees enjoy their work more efficiently, resulting in more efficient work and less absenteeism.

Safety Culture Program

Our installations contain flammable and toxic substances. Leaking these substances could cause exposure, a fire or even an explosion. This is prevented thanks to process safety (the safe handling of hazardous substances in process installations). A process installation is safe if it can withstand the properties of the hazardous substances and the operational conditions. Standards and specifications are applied for this. Installations must remain in good condition. That is why there are inspection programs to measure wall thicknesses, preventive maintenance is carried out, protections are tested and faults are repaired in time. We use safety studies to investigate in a structured way how installations can become even safer and how changes can be implemented in a controlled manner.

Company fire brigade

We have our own company fire brigade available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. There is a complete fire brigade team of 6 people present at any time of the day. This is completed by 16 full-time Fire & Safety employees, divided over five shifts, and operators who are trained to perform fire-fighting tasks. Everyone who is part of our fire service team is trained according to a government-established training plan and is trained according to a government-approved training plan. Our fire brigade has the most modern equipment at its disposal for fighting various types of fire – our foam extinguishing vehicles and extinguishing containers are specially designed for us, are very modern and have a large extinguishing capacity.
